Techshore Inspection Services : ROTAMETER:

The name rotameter was chosen in the past because at one time the float was designed with slots to produce a rotational movement for the purpose of centering and stabilizing the float.

The float is free to move up or down within the tapered tube. The tube is tapered to provide linear relationship between the flow rate and the float position within the tube. The fluid enters at the bottom and passes upward around the float and out at the top. The float rises and falls depending on the flow rate, giving a variable area of the annular passage. The upward hydraulic forces that act on the float are in balance with its weight less the buoyant force; this will maintain the float position in equilibrium. The scale shows flow rate in percent.

The rotameter sizing is also based on Bernoulli’s theorem. Rotameters may be used to measure gas or liquids and even some light slurry. Therefore, the sizing where very low flows are measured, capacities are usually given in cc/minute of air or water: this rotameter equation used for the head meter also applies to the rotameter:

C:\Users\user\Desktop\rotameter (1).jpg
The same fundamental equation used for the head meter also applies to the rotameter:
                Q =KA√(2gh)
In this equation the differential pressure (h) is replaced by the factor that causes it to remain constant. This factor denotes the volume and area of the float as well as the density of the float and the fluid.
C:\Users\user\Desktop\Rotameter.jpg
The equation will be:
Q = kAm √ ((2g Vf/Af) * (Df / (D-1))
Where:
Q = Flow Rate
K = Taper Constant
Am = Annular area measured at indicating edge
G = gravity
Vf = Float Volume
Af = Float Area
Df = Float Density
D = Fluid Density
The rotameter may be subjected to error due to changes in the fluid density small variations in fluid viscosity will not affect measurements if the float is designed to be insensitive to them. This will make Df/D = 2. Therefore (Df/(D-1)) = 1.
Since √1=1, the effect of density is eliminated. The float also must be designed to ignore small changes in the viscosity of the fluid. The rotameter available with a tapered glass tube or metal tube. The choice of tube depends on the application. Where toxic or flammable fluids are to be measured, a metal tube is selected for the rotameter. However in this case the float is not visible and a different indication technique is required. The linear movement of the float must be converted into a rotating movement for local indication or signal transmission. The metering float is extended with a permanent magnet on top of it. Glass tubes are limited up to use for low pressure say 20 Kg/cm2.

TECHSHORE INSPECTION SERVICES : PYROMETERS

                                      PYROMETERS
Temperature measurement by using thermocouples, RTDs and thermistors requires the sensors should be placed in physical contact with the medium or the object being measured, either directly or within a thermo well.
However, in some applications, contact measurement is not suitable. At high temperature the physical contact of the temperature sensors is not practical because it may melt. To solve this problem a non – contact method of temperature measuring is used. Also for bodies that are moving a non contact method of temperature sensing is most convenient.
Pyrometry is a technique for measuring temperature without contact. When a body is heated, it emits thermal energy known as heat radiation. A black body is a very good absorber of heat radiation.

OPTICAL PYROMETERS
Optical Pyrometers provide an accurate method of measuring temperature between 600 to 40000C and are very useful for checking and calibrating radiation pyrometers. But they are not suitable for recording and controlling temperatures.The method of operation of optical pyrometers is based on the comparison of intensity of the visual radiation emitted by the hot body by the source of known intensity. The brightness of radiation emitted by the hot body whose temperature is to be measured is matched with the brightness of a calibrated reference temperature whose temperature is known it consists of an incandescent lamp filament which is used as the reference source of radiation. This is kept in the field of vision of telescope, through which the filament and the hot body are viewed simultaneously.

Figure shows the schematic arrangement of optical pyrometer.
Wheatstone bridge circuit across which the moving coil galvanometer is connected. The electrical resistance varies according to the temperature, where the other arms of the wheat stones bridge do not change their resistance due to its temperature change. This is achieved by selecting materials whose ohmic value does not alter due to change in temperature. As the temperature of the filament increased the bridge progressively becomes imbalanced. The magnitude of imbalance is shown in galvanometer. This is calibrated in terms of temperature and the pointer deflection is read as the temperature which is equal to the temperature of the hot body. The filament is heated by a 2V battery in series with a rheostat by which the brightness of the filament is adjusted.

In this operation the hot object is viewed through the telescope. The filament 1st appears as a dark line against the bright ground as shown in the figure. On rotating the rheostat the brightness of the radiation matches the hot object. At that time the tip of the filament becomes invisible against the background. When this stage is achieved the temperature of the hot body can be read of from the galvanometer. An absorption screen is used between the hot object and the filament that reduces the intensity of the radiation from the hot body and the filament may be matched at lower temperature through the hot object may be at a much higher temperature. A monochromatic red screen is fixed to the eyepiece which will facilitate matching and also prevent the dazzle at higher temperatures.

BLOW OUT PREVENTER (BOP)

BLOW  OUT  PREVENTER   (BOP)

It  is a large specialized  valve used to seal  control and monitor oil and gas wells . BOP’s where developed to copup extreme  eratic  pressure  and uncontrolled  flow (formation vick ) from the well reservoir during drilling . kicks can load to potentially catastrophic damage or eratic called blow out .
               In addition to control the down hole (occurring in the drill hole ) pressure and antiflow of  oil and gas , BOP ‘s are intended to prevent tubing (eg: drill pipe and well casing ).Tools  and drilling fluids  are being blown  out of the well when  blow out threatens .
              BOP’s are  critical  to the safety  of the crew , rig equipment system  and  environment and the monitoring and maintenance of well integrity. These BOP’s are intended to be a fail-safe  device. The  BOP  is secured to  the drilling  platform and is used during the drilling process  to monitor and control the  the flow andprerssures of oil and gas that fluctuate during drilling. The BOP is to prevent damage to the rig and crew in the event of blow

RAMS  IN BLOW OUT PREVENTER

BOP  is  usually  consist  of  a  variety  of  different  rams  stacked  vertically .  Each  ram  in  the  stack  has  specific  function  that  is  used  in  different situations .A ram-type BOP works with a pair of opposing steel plungers called rams. The rams are again extend toward the center of the wellbore in order to restrict flow or allows opening in order to permit flow. The interior portion as well as the top faces of the rams are connected with some materials made up of elastometric seals called packers that press against each other, against the wellbore, and around the tube which is running inside the wellbore. Outlets at the sides of the BOP housing (body) are used for connection to choke and kill lines or valves.

  1. PIPE  RAMS
    The  pipe  rams  close  around  the outside  of the drill pipe  restricting , the  flow in the  space between  the drill and the wellbore also  known as the annulas .
  2. BLIND  RAMS
    The  blind  rams can seal off the  well  if  there  is no pipe in  the  well .
  3. BLIND  SHEAR RAMS
    The  blind  shear rams can seal off  the  well  even when there is a pipe  in the well  by  cutting through the pipe

MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING

It is the one of the most widely used NDT methods.This method is so fast and relatively easily as it requires least surface preparation when compared to other techniques.the magnetic particle examination method can be applied to detect crack and other defects at the surface and also sub-surface of the material under test, particularly ferromagnetic materials.for example- iron,cobalt and nickel.Types of defects that can be identified by this method are cracks,seams,cold shut,porosity,etc.

PRINCIPAL

This method is a combination of  NDT methods which are visual testing and magnetic flux leakage testing. The principal of this method is magnetic flux leakage or leakage in magnetic field or change in magnetic permeability

ADVANTAGE

  1. This method is relatively faster than liquid penetrant testing for the surface defects
  2. Indication at subsurface level can also be identified portable equipment's

DISADVANTAGE

  1. De magnetization of a part is required after the test
  2. We can apply this method only in ferrous material and cannot inspect Non ferrous materials such as aluminium ,stainless steel etc.

Techshore Turbine Flow meter

Turbine flow meter
Instrumentation mainly deals with different types of process variables such as flow, level, temperature and pressure. Sensors are the devices used to sense these process variables. Turbine flow meter is a major flow measuring sensor. Flow is mainly classified into three types based on the Reynolds number value. They are laminar flow, turbulent flow and transitional flow. For measuring turbulent as well as transitional flows only we are using turbine flow meter. Based on the turbine principle only the flow meter is working. At both the inlet and outlet side of the turbine flow meter so many pipelines will be provided and this will help to have a straight flow. As this flow enters inside the flow meter the turbine inside it will be starts rotating based on the pressure excreted. The movement of the turbine will be directly proportional flow rate. As the turbine moves the movement will be counted by the magnetic pickup which is placed above the turbine. The increase in count indicated by the magnetic pickup indicates the increase in flow rate and vice versa. A transmitter section is also inbuilt inside this sensor. So the output produced will be 4-20 mA.
