TECHSHORE INSPECTION SERVICES :Procedure of magnetic particle testing

SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface should be prepared in the initial step in such a way that the material surface should be grinded or machined which may mask the defects due to them. the adjacent areas and also the inspection areas should be made dry and free from lint, oil, dirt and dust which may disturb the examination. Cleaning can be conducted by several methods such as organic solvent cleaning, acid cleaning, etching cleaning etc.

TEMPERATURE CHECKING

Maintain the temperature on the test material to be inspected as 5-52 degree Celsius

APPLICATION OF IRON PARTICLE

The particles are available in dry and wet format. the dry powder usually stored in a holder is dusted off at the metal surface to provide a thin layer, any excess powder at the surface may be blowed off using a blower. The wet particles are applied by spray mode. both the particles either dry or wet are applied when the material is being magnetized.

VERIFICATION OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD

The field which is being applied is to be verified using a field indicator or a pie gauge.pie gauge made-up of steel has a total thickness of 3.25mm with a copper coating on one side, where as on the other side several lines each of a depth 0.8mm can be seen.pie gauge can be used to check the field strength and sensitivity of the magnetic field. yoke is placed parallel to any of the lines on the indicator on which the magnetic particles are dusted. then the yoke is activated and it distributes magnetic field in the indicator, then the powder is blown off. then if the powders are accumulated on the lines except the line parallel to which the yoke is placed the field direction could be confirmed and clearly defined lines of particles defines the sensitivity.

MAGNETIZING CURRENT

AC or DC current is used to  spread the magnetic field

CALIBRATION

Ac or Dc mode is to be calibrated before inspection.AC mode is calibrated by placing the yoke on an iron block which weighs about 4.5 kg and lifting up and for DC mode by placing the yoke on the same block but weighing about 18.1kg and lifting up.

DIRECTION OF THE APPLIED MAGNETIC FIELD

Magnetic field is applied on the specimen .test material should be inspected in two ways yoke in such a way that the second time inspection should be totally perpendicular to the first, so that no defects are missed.

INSPECTION AND INDICATION

The defects on the specimen are to be examined and filtered according to the customer requirements.

EVALUATION

Identified defects should be examined under the acceptance standards of the applicable code section.non relevant indication are to be considered as relevant even after the surface of the material are grinded ,smoothened and still visible.

MAPPING AND RECORDS OF INDICATIONS

The defects which are identified to be relevant are to be marked using suitable markers for further repairs. the final results are recorder on MT inspection records which includes size and shape of the test material, type of magnetization ,equipment used to apply magnetic field, type of magnetic particle used and sketches indicating the coverage.

TECHSHORE INSPECTION SERVICES :Procedure Of Liquid Penetrant Test

Preparing the metal surface

This step determines the effectiveness in getting the final result of defects. The surface of the metal to be inspected may contain a lot of impurities such as oil, water, grease, dust and many other impurities that prevent the Penetrant which is applied onto the surface in the coming step. These impurities may prevent the Penetrant to get into any defects .so usually the metal surface is cleaned off by using a liquid called as solvent. The solvent is usually available in pressurized spray can which is to be sprayed at an angle of 45 degrees keeping a one feet distance from the metal surface, hence the diluted impurities are cleaned off using a lint free towel in a single direction.

Application of Penetrant

The cleaned metal surface is then applied with Penetrant. Penetrant is a high contrast colored dye which is usually available in black, brown and red in color. The Penetrant is applied by any of the following methods which are spraying, brushing, immersing, and pouring.

Dwell time

The applied Penetrant is let on the specimen for a specific time so that the Penetrant gets inside any open defects at the surface; which is called as the dwell time. The dwell time varies upon the type of defects. a gross defect may take a time between 3 to 10 minutes where as a tight crack may take a time from 10 to 30 minutes. The dwell time also depends upon the temperature, humidity and also size and shape of a discontinuity.

Cleaning the excess Penetrant

The Penetrant all over the surface except the Penetrant which got inside the defect area is an excess Penetrant. This Penetrant at the surface should be cleaned off for the further step. The excess Penetrant is cleaned off using a clean lint free towel and wiped in one side direction which is called as wipe-on or wipe-off technique.

Application of developer

The developer is a white contrast colored dye; it is applied to the metal surface where the excess Penetrant is cleaned off. The application mode involves spraying, dipping, and dusting. The main property of a developer is reverse capillary action or bleed out action or absorption property.

Developing time and development of an indication

After applying the developer, it needs a time to absorb the Penetrant from the defect area. This time is referred to as the developing time. Normal developing time can be calculated as 1.5 * dwell time. After this particular time it can be noted that the Penetrant from any defect will be absorbed off by the developer to the surface and hence a clear indication can be seen.

Inspection

Any defects present which is shown at the metal surface, is to be inspected under proper lighting.

Post cleaning

Finally the metal surface with Penetrant and developer should be cleaned off using solvent or cleaner

TECHSHORE INSPECTION SERVICES : HEAT EXCHANGERS

A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat between the fluids. The fluids may be separated by a solid wall to avoid mixing. They are widely used in space heating,  power stations, chemical plants, air conditioning, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, refrigeration, and sewage treatment. The classic example of a heat exchanger is found in an internal combustion engine. Inside this engine is enclosed with a circulating fluid known as engine coolant flows through out the radiator coils of the engine and air flows through the coils, which cools the coolant and helps in heating the incoming air.

For the efficient operation of the compressor, the temperature inside the gas should be low. At the lower temperature, the energy will be very less and it is used to compress the gas for the given application of final temperature and pressure. However, the gas exhausted from both separators as well as the compressor will be relatively hot. When gas inside it is compressed, the thermodynamic balance remains same, which means that pressure of the gas times the volume of the liquid over the temperature (PV/T) must remain constant. (PV = nkT). As a result the temperature increase. Heat exchangers of different types are used for cooling the gas. Plate heat exchangers are the device which consist of a number of plates where the medium helps in cooling and gas circulates in opposite direction between the alternating plates. Tube and shell exchangers place tubes inside a shell enclosed with cooling fluid. Pure water with corrosion inhibitors is mainly used as cooling fluid.https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cd/Straight-tube_heat_exchanger_1-pass.PNG/220px-Straight-tube_heat_exchanger_1-pass.PNG

When designing the process, the thermal energy balancing should be very important .Heat produced should be conserved, by using the cooling fluid produced from the gas train helps to reheat oil inside the oil train. Excess heat is dispersed, by cooling seawater. However, hot seawater will be highly corrosive, so materials with high resistance to corrosion, such as titanium must be used.
