INTRODUCTION

It is the device which is used to rotate the drill bit, so as to make drilling effective and in controlled manner.

TYPES OF ROTATING SYSTEM

It is mainly of two types

TOP DRIVE SYSTEM

KELLY AND ROTARY SYSTEM

TOP DRIVE SYSTEM

It is more advanced system in rotating system. By using top drive system we can eliminate the use of traditional Kelly and rotary table. It can be operated directly from driller console on rig floor. Top drive is suspended directly from derrick or mast.It consists of an inbuilt motor which gives rotating action to the drill bit.It can run 3 drill pipes at a time. As top drive is too heavy it requires rail guide. By using top drive drilling process can be done more effectively. It requires less manual labour.Drilling time is less in top drive system as we compared to Kelly and rotary system. The drilling speed also can be varied according by controlling the sped of motor in top drive. It has disadvantage that the maintenance cost is very high.

KELLY AND ROTARY SYSTEM

It is the traditional way of rotary system. It needs the rotary table to rotate the drill bit. In this system we can only one drill pipe of 35ft can be drill at a time. As compared to TOP DRIVE the maintenance cost of Kelly system is very low. This system requires more manual labours.The drilling rate is less compares to top drive system and drilling time also very high in this system.

PARTS OF KELLY AND ROTARY SYSTEM

SWIVEL

Swivel is a mechanical device that is suspended directly below the travelling block and above the Kelly. It has an extended arm which act as an inlet for pressurized mud to the well bore for drilling purpose. Swivel does not rotate but it make drill bit to rotate for effective drilling.

KELLY SPINNER

This device is located below the swivel. It is designed to operate pneumatically. Kelly can be rotate by using the Kelly spinner for making pipe connections. But main thing is that Kelly spinner can be rotate only clockwise, so that for drilling purpose it is not used .Kelly spinner is used only for making up drill pipe connections.

KELLY DRIVE

It is a thick metal hollow cross section having square, hexagonal or octagonal shape. The Kelly is selected according to depth to be drilled, for more depth Kelly with more face is used. Kelly carries KELLY BUSHING with the help of this the Kelly transmit rotary motion to drill pipe.

KELLY BUSHING

Kelly bushes in Kelly bushing. When this kelly bushing falls on the grooves of rotary table by rotating rotary table, the drill sting rotate and thus the drill bit also rotate. When Kelly bushing fits on rotary table Kelly can also pass through rotary table. Kelly bushing can also be called as drive bushing.

ROTARY BUSHING

The Kelly bushing bushes inside the rotary bushing. It is also called as master bushing. Drill string with the help of slip is seated in this portion, when it is suspended from Kelly while in the process of pipe connection or in time of tripping.

ROTARY TABLE

IT consists of a motor and drive shaft assembly. It transmits the centrifugal motion of motor to the drive shaft and the shaft transmits this centrifugal motion to the rotating motion of rotary table.
