Dry Chemical
Powder: - It is used to combat fires in flammable liquids, gases and greases
include such fires when involved with energized electrical equipment is a potassium bicarbonate based dry chemical.
The chemical powder is free flowing, water repellent and nonabrasive and when
used as a fire extinguisher agent will produce no toxic effects. Because of its
excellent firefighting effectiveness this product is widely used in other high
risk areas.
Carbon dioxide or Nitrogen is used as an expelling gas. This system can
be effectively installed in restaurants, fuel stations etc.
Various chemicals are used in dry powder extinguishers depending on job
they are intended. For example;
1) Sodium Bicarbonate – For flammable liquids
2) Potassium Bicarbonate – Used in USA for class ‘B’
fires
3) Ammonium Phosphate – ‘General purpose’ for class A and
B fires.
4) Ternary Eutectic Chloride – For Uranium, Plutonium, and
Magnesium alloys
All dry powders are treated to improve their ‘flow’ properties and reduce
‘caking’. This treatment may be involved the adding of a small portion of very
fine silica to the content.
